The annual Combined Jewish Appeal was unofficially launched here at a dinner given by Samuel Bronfman, honorary chairman of the campaign who pointed out that “the 1,600,000 Jews living in Israel are, through unfortunate circumstances, still in great need of financial assistance. ” Not only Jews, he said, but also their neighbors will benefit from the generosity of people of the American continent.
The dinner climaxed an intensified program for advance gifts. The drive itself, which will be for $1,568,063 for the Combined Jewish Appeal and $1,220,000 for the United Israel Appeal, opens October 29th.
Increased contributions from every donor were urged to meet the two goals. Mr. Bronfman said the rapid growth of the Jewish community in the city put a special burden on the agencies serving it. J. J. Block, general chairman of the 1953 campaign, said the security of the Jewish community and sound foundations for its future both demanded expanded services.
