California’s top officials launched a campaign to force European insurance companies to settle Holocaust-era claims against the firms by survivors and their heirs. The state’s insurance commissioner outlined several measures against the firms during a news conference last Friday, including the possible shutdown of the California operations of those insurers who refuse to pay the claims. Gov. Gray Davis warned the insurers at the briefing to “pay now, or we guarantee you will pay more later.”
