The British Labor Party today reaffirmed its determination to stand for fulfillment of Britain’s obligations in Palestine under the mandate. Philip Noel-Baker, speaking for the national executive during a debate on the war situation at the party’s annual conference, declared: “We are not like Vichy. We stand by the mandate in Palestine.”

Neutral observers in Cairo generally agree that the subject of an Arab federation would best be left until after the war without any promises being made, the Manchester Guardian reported today. These observers say it would be advisable to avoid possibility of misunderstanding on the delicate issue of pan-Arabism which might have repercussions among the Jews.

The Egyptian press warmly welcomed Foreign Secretary Eden’s statement on closer Arab ties. One paper which frequently refers to Palestine as “southern Syria” declared the Arabs understood Eden’s reference to Syria to mean both “northern and southern Syria” and expressed the hope that Eden’s declaration would be officially placed on record to avoid a repetition of the ambiguities in the McMahon correspondence during the last war.
