The British Government was pictured this week-end as considering a proposal to the Soviet Union that she join the other powers in an agreement to guarantee Israel against Arab incursion and thus remove a major Middle East sore spot.

The British press underlined today that no Middle East policy has any meaning for Britain unless it includes Israel. The Sunday Times urged that Britain voice in “explicit and precise” terms the obligations it has under the United Nations Charter to defend Israel’s independence and integrity. The Sunday Graphic pointed out that neither Britain nor the United States could stand by while Israel was being “exterminated” and that the “strongest possible moral and humanitarian considerations would oblige us to defend it. “
