The value and importance of Jewish religious education in this country was emphasized in a message from Governor Herbert H. Lehman of New York read here at the opening session of the third annual meeting of the American Association for Jewish Education. Sixty delegates representing lay leaders in Jewish education in twenty cities throughout the United States are attending the gathering, in addition to a number of Jewish educators.
Gov. Lehman in his message pointed out that “it is essential that we bring Jewish education to our young people” in order to strengthen their determination to contribute the best that is in them to the social ideals of American democracy. Mark Eisner, president of the Association, reported on the activities of the organization and recommended that in the coming year the organization undertake to correlate the various national agencies which are now functioning in the field of Jewish education and plan a special service for Jewish Education Committees in the seventy cities and localities in America which have local Jewish community councils. He also urged the establishment of a survey bureau at the national offices of the Association to help those communities where “War Chest” drives may adversely effect Jewish education appropriations from Jewish Welfare Funds.
