The fiftieth birthday of B. Charney Vladeck, head of the Jewish Labor Committee and general manager of the Jewish Daily Forward, was celebrated last night with a dinner at the Manhattan Opera House attended by nearly 1,000 persons.
Mr. Vladeck was eulogized for his services to the Jews, to labor and to the city by Tenement House Commissioner Langdon W. Post, Matthew Woll, vice president of the American Federation of Labor; Paul Baerwald, chairman of the ORT; Dr. Sol Lowenstein, director of the Federation for the Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies and Abraham Herman, chairman of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society.
Mayor LaGuardia lauded Mr. Vladeck, who is a member of the Municipal Housing Authority, for his civic achievements at a celebration in his honor the previous evening at Carnegie Hall. Several thousand persons were present. David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, was among the other speakers. Jewish, labor, and civic leaders and noted authors and publicists join in paying tribute to Mr. Vladeck in a book entitled “B.C. Vladeck, Fifty Years of Life and Labor” edited by Ephim H. Jeshurin and published by the Forward Association in connection with the birthday celebration.
Praising him for his devotion to principles, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of the New York Times states: “With a profound impulse for reform, he none the less brings understanding to existing systems. His sympathies, his hopes and his aspirations know no limit. A typical American of the highest order–we are fortunate that many years of activity still lie before him.”
Oswald Garrison Villard, contributing editor of The Nation, says of him: “Well, I wish all native born Americans, and particularly our Sons and Daughters of the Revolution, were as truly devoted to the institutions and welfare of our country as Vladeck…The trouble is that there are not enough Vladecks to begin to go around.”
Others whose tributes are included in the 225-page Yiddish and English volumes are: Walter Citrine, British labor leader; Mr. Dubinsky, Morris Rothenberg, president of the Zionist Organization of America; Philip F. LaFollette, Governor of Wisconsin; Sidney Hillman, labor leader; Mr. Lowenstein, Edward F. McGrady, assistant Secretary of Labor; Upton Sinclair and Hendrik W. Van Loon, authors and Felix M. Warburg, philanthropist.
In the Yiddish section of the volume, those paying respects to Mr. Vladeck include: Sholom Asch, Abraham Raisin, Dr. Chaim Zhitlowsky, Prof. Simeon Dubnow, David Pinski and S. Niger.
