More than 30,000 persons packed Luna Park, this city’s largest stadium, today for a rousing celebration of the 20th anniversary of Israel’s independence. An overflow crowd estimated at 3,000 stood outside to hear the addresses of Mrs. Golda Meir, former Foreign Minister of Israel, and other speakers which were carried over loudspeakers.
The celebration, billed as a mass rally for Israel, heard speeches by Ambassador Moshe Alon of Israel and Nachman Radzichowski, chairman of the Argentine Zionist Organization. Mrs. Meir was thunderously applauded when she declared, “there will never again be Syrian guns on the Golan Heights aimed at Israel.” She delivered an impassioned speech in which she appealed for peace with the Arabs but asserted that Israel can and must defend itself because international guarantees have proven worthless.
