An Israeli tennis player beat the world’s eighth-ranked woman in the sport. Shahar Peer, herself ranked 26th in the world, beat Elena Dementieva of Russia in the French Open on Saturday. Peer, a 19-year-old conscript in the Israeli army, is to face off later on Sunday with Swiss player Martina Hingis, a former world champion.
