Americans for Peace Now wrote to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, urging the Pentagon to “consider broad U.S. interests” before deciding to remove U.S. peacekeepers stationed in the Sinai. “The elimination of U.S. participation” in the international force “could have a negative impact” on “stability along the Israeli-Egyptian border, which is particularly important at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East,” the letter stated.
