The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith reported today that 87 percent of the private employment agencies in New York and five other cities it has approached in a random sampling, disregard Federal, state and local statutes which forbid employment discrimination. Of 388 agencies queried in New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago and Miami, the ADL said, 358 accepted orders for a “white Gentile” or “white Protestant” secretary.

The study was part of a general ADL report on white collar employment practices and problems being submitted to the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Arnold Forster, general counsel of ADL, said that “not only did an overwhelming majority of the agencies accept discriminatory Job orders, but their comments revealed an utter disregard for fair employment laws.”
