A Knesset committee on Wednesday narrowly voted to defer until after the Israeli elections a decision on whether to suspend the parliamentary standing of Aryeh Deri, the leader of the powerful fervently Orthodox Shas Party. As a result, Deri, who was given a four-year sentence last month for taking bribes while serving in the Interior Ministry in the late 1980s and early 1990s, may be able to play a role during coalition negotiations after the elections.
