A delegation of Jewish and Protestant leaders in##ing Raffaele Cantoni, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of ## called on President Eurico de Nicola and presented memorandums demanding that ## religious and cultural freedom of minority groups be guaranteed in the new constitution and that Catholic instruction in the school system not be compulsor.

The majority Christian Democratic Party is pressing for the inclusion in the constitution of the Concordat and Interan Pasts negotiated between Mussolini and the Vatican in 1929 which provide that Catholician become the official religion of Italy. The educational system would also be based on Catholician and public attacks on Catholic principles would become a penal offense.

Later, Cantoni, was received by Premier Alcide de Casperi and Dr. Umberto Terracini, president of the Constituent Assembly, which is framing the new constitution. They discussed the question of religious freedom for minority groups and Italy’s role in aiding Jewish refugees following the withdrawal of UMRRA.

A party of Jewish refugees who illegally entered Italy from Austria have been arrested at the border town of Bolsano. The Jewish community of Milan is intervening in their behalf.
