900 Americans to Study at Hebrew U. – Largest U.S. Student Contingent Overseas

More than 900 new students – the largest number of American students ever enrolled in an Israeli institution of higher learning – will participate in study programs of the Hebrew University at Jerusalem during the coming academic year, the office of academic affairs of the American Friends of the Hebrew University announced today.

The largest category of American students will be in the one-year study program in which 478 U.S. college sophomores, juniors and recent graduates will participate. The students come from 134 United States and Canadian institutions. Seventy-seven master’s and doctoral candidates have been accepted for the graduate programs. In the freshman-preparatory year for selected high school graduates, there are 55 candidates from 15 states. Among the university’s regular undergraduates seeking their degree from the Hebrew University are 38 American students from 16 states and 30 colleges.

About 250 students qualified for the 1968 summer courses in English, of whom about half are engaged in professional or graduate studies. Participating in the world seminar for Jewish service, a program given by the university’s Institute for Contemporary Jewry, are eight executive directors of Jewish community centers, four executives of the American Jewish Committee, a field representative of the American Jewish Congress and a representative of the Philadelphia Federation of Jewish Agencies.
