Six hundred interned refugee scientists, engineers and inventors of international repute have offered their services to Prime Minister Churchill in support of the war effort.
The group is prepared to run its own factories, raise the necessary capital and each man will stand guarantor for the integrity and loyalty of his fellows. The offer wan placed in the hands of Neil Maclean, London solicitor, and presented to Churchill in the House of Commons through the solicitor’s father, who is an M.P.
The group includes men known internationally as experts in many fields of activity. The letter in which the offer was made stated all the men were “refugees from Nazi oppression and all of them are constant in grim determination to extirpate this scourge which glorifies force at the expense of freedom and learning.”
The letter emphasizes that they are prepared to work, if necessary, under armed guard and pay with their own lives if a traitor is found among them.
