Jewish immigrants to the number of 5,986 entered Argentina during the past year, according to the report of the local Jewish Immigrants Protective Society, which has just been issued. Some 71 percent of all the Jewish immigrants who arrived last year came from Poland.
The number of immigrants arriving in Argentina from Poland during the past few years has increased heavily as a result of the bad economic situation in Poland. While during 1925 the general number of immigrants arriving from Poland in Argentina was 9,122, the number of immigrants arriving from that country in 1929 was 24,233, according to the report.
Because an economic crisis has lately made itself felt in Argentina, the Polish Minister in Buenos Aires has advised the Polish government to curtail the emigration to Argentina. But as a result of the efforts of the local Jewish Immigrants Protective Society an exception was made for Jewish emigrants, since it was proven that these immigrants do not become a burden either to the Argentine government or to the Polish legation.
The Jewish Immigrants Protective Society is supported by the American Hias through the Hicem, international Jewish immigrant aid society.
