President Itzhak Ben Zvi was on the pier in Haifa today to welcome a party of 560 Jews and Karaites from Egypt who arrived on the S.S Mediterranean, a passenger ship chartered to move the exiles from Naples where an Egyptian vessel brought them last week. He told them that they arrived in Israel not as refugees, but as citizens and brothers. The Karaites were immediately transferred to homes waiting for them in a settlement of Karaites in the Negev.

Abraham Manteld, a member of the Cairo rabbinate who was among the exiles, declared that Egyptian Chief Rabbi Haim Nahoum’s last statement of support of the Nasser regime was the “result of a situation without choice.”
