2,000 Attend Opening of Yivo’s Three-day Parley in New York

A three-day annual conference of the Yiddish Scientific Institute–YIVO opened here last night before an audience of more than 2,000 persons to consider various aspects of Jewish scientific and cultural life.

Frof. Horace Kallen read a paper on “The Jewish Community and the American Idea,” while Prof. Simon Rawidowicz spoke on the significance of Maimonides, the medieval Jewish philosopher and scientist, whose death 750 years ago is being marked this year. Dr. Jacob Shatzky read a paper on the “Problems of Jewish Social Science,” while Dr. Judah Shapiro, of the Joint Distribution Committee, spoke on American Jewish institutions in Europe. Prizes were awarded today to winners of the YIVO’s sixth annual essay contest.
