(JTA) — A Polish far-right politician lobbying for easier access to firearms said the Holocaust would not have happened if every Jew had a gun.

Janusz Korwin-Mikke, the only lawmaker in Poland’s parliament from his Coalition for the Renewal of the Republic-Freedom and Hope, made the statement on Wednesday, the eve of Israel’s official day of commemoration for Holocaust victims, during an interview with the TVN network.

“If every Jew had a gun before the war, there would be no Holocaust,” he said.

The politician also said that “every young guy has to have a gun.” Adding that 140,000 Poles have firearms, he said, “With these weapons you can kill, yet somehow no one kills.

Korwin-Mikke is a candidate in Poland’s presidential election on May 11.
