(JTA) — The U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Democratic Party fundraiser Noah Mamet as the U.S. ambassador to Argentina.
Mamet was approved for the post Tuesday by a vote of 50-43 despite criticism during the hearing that he has never visited the South American country. He succeeds Vilma Martinez, who left the position 17 months ago.
Mamet, 43, was a key player in President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, bundling more than $500,000 for the campaign. He is a member of the National Jewish Democratic Council.
The California native worked for the state’s Democratic Party and helped Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign in Santa Barbara County.
Mamet, who owns a political consulting firm, reportedly will be invited to the Buenos Aires Jewish center AMIA in September for the ceremony to remember the victims of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.
