(JTA) — A British man who stabbed a violinist to death in suburban Manchester had been discharged from a hospital psychiatric ward less than two weeks before the attack, an inquest found.
Jonathan Mills told police he attacked Michael Kahan in June 2008 outside a kosher bakery in Crumpsall because he “needed to kill a Jewish person,” according to the ongoing inquest in Manchester Coroners Court that resumed 5 1/2 years after the attack, British media reported.
Police say the attack was unprovoked.
The attack came 10 days after Mills, who was 37 at the time of the stabbing, was released from a psychiatric ward at North Manchester General Hospital. Kahan was 39.
It is believed that Mills stopped taking medication for his psychiatric condition. He had delusions that Jewish people were preventing him from getting his medication, according to the Jewish Chronicle.
