WASHINGTON (JTA) — A son of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas wants to reinstate a lawsuit against Foreign Policy magazine and a prominent conservative scholar.
Politico reported that Yasser Abbas this week appealed a U.S. District Court judge’s ruling last month that his lawsuit could not withstand standards that protect the publication of lawsuits in the public interest.
Abbas filed the suit over an article in the magazine’s June 2012 edition that suggested he had grown wealthy due to the position of his father.
The article was written by Jonathan Schanzer, a vice president of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and carried the headline “The Brothers Abbas: Are the sons of the Palestinian president growing rich off their father’s system?”
Schanzer is a former U.S. Treasury official under President George W. Bush and is noted for his expertise in tracking how Middle East entities spend and raise funds.
