The following message was sent out Saturday by Rabbi Mark Covitz, director of the URJ Goldman Union Camp (GUCI) in Zionsville, Indiana:

This Shabbat afternoon, lightning struck URJ Goldman Union Camp. Three campers were injured. Camp personnel and emergency professionals responded quickly. The children were taken to local hospitals and we have spoken with each child’s parents.

We are resuming our normal camp schedule, which will include dinner and evening program.

Please know, the safety of your children is our highest priority.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Mark Covitz

NBC News is reporting that one of the three campers is in critical condition:

Camp counselors had already begun lifesaving efforts when responders arrived at the scene of the strike, according to police.

The injured children were transported to local hospitals, police said. Their names have not been released by authorities.

It was not immediately clear which one of the three victims – a 9-year-old girl from Missouri, a 9-year-old boy from Kentucky, and a 12-year-old boy from Ohio – was in critical condition on Saturday afternoon.
