Comings & Goings: Sugarman at Presidents Conference, Bergman at AJC

Some comings and goings in the Jewish community: Robert Sugarman is the new chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and Stanley Bergman is elected president at the American Jewish Committee.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Here are some comings and goings in the Jewish community:

Robert Sugarman was elected unanimously to a one-year term as chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, succeeding Richard Stone. Sugarman, a retired partner of the Weil Gotshal and Manges law firm, served as the national chair of the Anti-Defamation League from 2009 to 2012; he has been with the ADL for three decades.

Stanley Bergman was elected president of the American Jewish Committee, succeeding Robert Elman. Bergman has served the past three years as chair of the AJC’s Board of Governors. He will continue in his post as board chairman and CEO of Henry Schein Inc.

Rabbi Eric Lankin was appointed executive director of the American Society for Yad Vashem. Lankin has served with various American Jewish organizations and for 14 years has been a congregational rabbi in Pennsylvania, Florida and New York.

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell will head the national office of the National Council of Young Israel in New York. Tirschwell has served as executive director of the Robert M. Beren Academy in Houston and was the founding head of school at the Weinbaum Yeshiva High School in Boca Raton, Fla.

Bernie Farber was selected as the new chair of the Toronto-based Ve’ahavta: The Canadian Jewish Humanitarian and Relief Committee, succeeding Henry Greisman. Farber formerly served as CEO of the now-defunct Canadian Jewish Congress.

Alex Selsky was named CEO of the World Forum for Russian Jewry, an international Jewish organization of Russian-speaking Jews that was launched last year to influence governments to join the fight against Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons program.
