JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two rockets believed to be fired by Syrian rebels struck an area controlled by Hezbollah, sparking fears that Lebanon will be dragged into its neighbor’s civil war.
The rockets landed in southern Beirut on Sunday. Four people were injured and residential buildings were damaged.
The attack came a day after Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said Hezbollah would support the Syrian government against the rebels, who have been fighting a civil war against President Bashar Assad’s forces for two years.
Earlier last week, Col. Abdul-Jabbar al-Aqidi, commander of the Syrian rebels’ Military Council in Aleppo, said in a video that the rebels would fire on southern Beirut in response to Hezbollah’s assistance to Assad.
Dozens of Hezbollah fighters were killed in continuing battles between government forces and rebels in the Syrian border town of Qusair, according to The Associated Press.
