JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israelis for a second straight week protested against steep austerity measures in the new state budget.
More than 1,000 Israelis demonstrated Saturday night in Tel Aviv. Hundreds of others also protested throughout the country, including in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea, as well as in Jerusalem and Beersheba.
The budget, which raises taxes and cuts the child allowance, passed the Cabinet last week.
Demonstrators in front of Netanyahu’s home were protesting the fact that expenses at the prime minister’s official residence have doubled in the last four years.
The demonstrations are reminiscent of the 2011 social equality protests supported by Yair Lapid, who now as finance minister proposed the current budget.
