A Los Angeles newspaper made a point of focusing on Gil Cates’ theatrical work in a recent article assessing the Hollywood filmmaker’s artistic endeavors, and noted that “many of America’s A-list playwrights had a particularly special relationship with Cates,” who was devoted to the Geffen Theater. Cates, who died at 77 on Oct. 31 was featured in a recent Eulogizer post.
Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies, who had four plays produced at the Geffen, told of how Cates commissioned a Christmas play from him. The Jewish playwright, who wrote, "Brooklyn Boy," said: "If you want a Christmas play from me, it’s going to be a Jewish Christmas play." “He said, ‘That would be great.’ So I’m working on “A Brooklyn Christmas,” dedicated to Gil."
