Gamliel Kronemer, author of the Fruit of the Vine column for The Jewish Week in New York, wrote a loving tribute to Ha’aretz wine critic Daniel Rogov, whose colorful life and career were remembered in a recent Eulogizer posting.
Among the “newsy” items in the column were Kronemer’s reporting of Rogov’s real name (David Joroff) and his correct birthplace (Mogilev, Belarus). But beyond that, Kronemer wrote of Rogov’s generosity, quirkiness (he listed various of his pen names as co-authors on several of his books), and journalistic productivity, and described him as being “imbued with (the) rare sort of vivacity” that Boswell attributed to the famed 18th century actor and playwright, David Garrick.
The Eulogizer highlights the life accomplishments of famous and not-so-famous Jews who have passed away recently. Write to the Eulogizer at eulogizer@jta.org.
