In 1949, Congress celebrated Israel’s first birthday with two hours of speeches:
Sixteen Congressmen, including Jews and Christians, arose in the House of Representatives late today during a two-hour special order on Israel to register endorsement of the new nation on the occasion of its first anniversary.
Rep, Arthur G. Klein, of New York, who requested the special observance, said late today that perhaps 40 other Congressmen indicated that they would enter an extension of remarks later for the Congressional Record. Congressmen who spoke complimented Israel for its contributions to world peace and democracy.
