In case you needed a reminder, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright really does not like Israel.
Wright — who was last heard complaining that the Jews… er…. Zionists were keeping him from seeing his most powerful former congregant — had some not-so-nice words for the Jewish state during a recent appearance at a black church in Baltimore.
Baltimore Sun columnist Marta Mossburg was at the Empowerment Temple to hear Wright tell the thousands who had come to see him speak:
"The state of Israel is an illegal, genocidal… place," he said. "To equate Judaism with the state of Israel is to equate Christianity with [rapper] Flavor Flav."
But what does Wright know about Israel? And what does he know about Jews?
Not a lot, apparently.
Mossburg reports that Wright also recommended that the black community look to Hebrew schools as a model for strengthening the African roots of African-American identity. But as Mossburg points out — and as many Jews know — Hebrew schools haven’t always been the most effective incubators of rock-solid Jewish identity.
In addition, Wright had some unkind words for his former friend in the Oval Office: “Barack Obama was selected before he was elected. Wall Street selected him. GM, Ford and Chrysler selected him. When you are selected by them, you are beholden to them.”
I will update this post if Wall Street, the Big Three automakers or Flavor Flav respond to Wright’s remarks.
