A month ago I panned a Religion Dispatches story about the sexual misconduct charges Baylor Universty’s Jewish studies director Marc Ellis is facing.
The story attempted to link the charges to Baylor’s president, Ken Starr (and his Clinton-era reputation as a sexual inquisitor), and his alleged pro-Israel proclivities. (Ellis is an Israel critic.)
Kiera Feldman, its author, now updates the story for New York magazine, and there’s more there there.
She cites allegations by Ellis and his lawyer that Starr had authorized charges against the professor; she raises real questions about the transparency of the process; and this time around she avoids unsubstantiated speculation about what role Ellis’ and Starr’s respective views on Israel might have played in the affair.
