Rep. Steve Rothman (D-N.J.) is saying he’ll do everything he can to make sure Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi doesn’t visit Englewood, N.J. when he comes to the United Nations General Assembly next month. Here’s his statement:
“I have been working to make sure Moammar Gadhafi does not come to Englewood, New Jersey since I heard rumors to that effect last Saturday. I immediately called the White House and the Department of State and have been in close, regular contact every day with the highest levels of both ever since. President Obama and Secretary Clinton are personally aware of this situation. What I can tell you so far is that, according to the White House and the Department of State, the Libyan government has not made a decision about where Mr. Gadhafi will stay if he attends the UN General Assembly next month. The US government has strongly urged the Libyan government that if Mr. Gadhafi does come to the United States for the opening of the General Assembly he should not stay in Englewood. If he were to do so it could create a situation that may be dangerous to the citizens of Englewood and it would reflect very poorly on the nation of Libya. We are hopeful that, within the next few days, the Libyan government will make it clear that Mr. Gadhafi will not be coming to Englewood.”
