House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) spent a lot of time with the Jewish community this week. On Tuesday, he spoke at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s Consultation on Conscience, and the next evening he received the Tikkun Olam Award from the National Jewish Democratic Council.
"I want to thank you for what you do in repairing the world, on the prejudice that exists, on the pain that exists," Hoyer told the crowd. "No community in America has upheld these values more faithfully than the Jewish community — period. For that, I thank you."
Hoyer also said that if he "retired tomorrow, and I"m not planning on retiring," the two things he’d most want to be remembered for would be the Americans for Disabilities Act and "my chairmanship of the Helsinki Commission," because "it is important that we lift anonymous people up, that they are known."
