A leading pro-Israel political action committee is helping Joe Lieberman keep his committee chairmanship.
The New Jersey-based NORPAC, in an e-mailed action alert, is urging its supporters to call Democratic Senate leaders and tell them that Lieberman deserves to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee and seniority in his other committee posts. The e-mail asks recipients to tell Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Majority Whip Dick Durbin and Democratic Caucus Chair Chuck Schumer that Lieberman is "the moral voice of the Senate and the Democratic Party needs him."
The alert also states that "it is because of Senator Lieberman’s involvement" with the Homeland Security Committee "that our Yeshiva Day schools have received funds to compensate for their undue burden for security from the danger from terrorists."
Here’s the full alert:
Dear Friends
Background:
The Senate Democratic leadership is considering punitive action against Senator Joseph Lieberman for supporting Senator John McCain in the presidential election.
Joe Lieberman won his last Senate race as an independent and voted with the Democrats in the Senate to give them the majority and every chairmanship in the
Senate for the last two years.
Now the Democratic Leadership wants to take away the Chairmanship of Senator Lieberman of the Homeland Security Committee.
We are asking you to call the Democratic Senate leadership offices and express your concern.
It is because of Senator Lieberman’s involvement with this committee that our Yeshiva Day schools have received funds to compensate
for their undue burden for security from the danger from terrorists.
NORPAC action alert.
Please to call the offices of
Senator Harry Reid Majority Leader Phone: (202) 224-3542
Senator Dick Durbin Majority Whip Phone: (202) 224-2152
Senator Charles Schumer Democratic Caucus Chair Phone: (202) 224-6542
What to say:
We are calling to express our support for you to do everything possible to keep Senator Joseph Lieberman in the Democratic Party including maintaining his seniority on all his committees and his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.Senator Lieberman voted with the Democrats when he won his last election and it is only because of him that the Democrats have been the majority party for the last two years. He is the moral voice of the Senate and the Democratic Party needs him. Taking away his committee chairmanship will drive him from the party and violates the pledge made to him when he gave the Democrats the majority two years ago by caucusing on their side.
