(JTA) — Several Israeli police officers and Palestinians were wounded in clashes that broke out inside the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem and spread across the West Bank.
The officers entered the compound on Friday through the Old City’s Mughrabi Gate after Palestinians hurled stones in their direction. The officers dispersed the rioters using stun grenades, Army Radio reported.
The news site Ynet reported that during the riot in Jeruasalem, nine police officers and a number of demonstrators were lightly injured at the compound.
Friday morning also saw clashes erupt between Jewish settlers from the Adei Ad outpost and Palestinians from the village of Mrair in the northern West Bank. The settlers claimed Palestinians from the village had stolen one of their herds during the night. Israeli officers arrived at the scene and restored order.
Riots also broke out in Beituniya near Jerusalem and in As Sawiya, near the Tapuah Junction, where Palestinians claimed settlers destroyed 75 olive tree saplings and damaged 21 trees.
Ynet reported security forces were on heightened alert ahead of the planned funeral on Friday of Mohammad Asfour, a 22-year-old Palestinian who died on Thursday from an injury he sustained from an Israeli rubber-coated bullet.
Asfour was hit in the head during protests against Israel’s security barrier in Aboud, a town near Ramallah.
