(JTA) — A video of members of England’s national soccer team touring Auschwitz-Birkenau will be distributed as a Holocaust education project.
Produced in conjunction with the United Kingdom-based Holocaust Education Trust, the footage released Jan. 10 by the English Football Association shows national team captain Steven Gerrard and teammates reflecting on their meeting last June with Holocaust survivors Zigi Shipper and Ben Helfgott.
The video will be distributed to secondary school and college students as part of the Holocaust Educational Trust’s legacy project.
Seven players toured the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi camp, while 15 others went to Oskar Schindler’s factory in Krakow prior to the Euro 2012 soccer competition in Poland.
"As a footballer," Gerard says in the video, "you realize how lucky and privileged you are to lead the lives we are leading today."
