ROME (JTA) – Police and customs officials in the port of Naples seized five containers believed to contain arms about to be shipped to Egypt.
An Egyptian man was arrested in connection with the case. Italian media said Israeli authorities may have tipped off the Italians to the case.
News reports said that during the operation on the night of Dec. 7 and early Dec. 8, police opened one of the five containers and found rocket-launching pistols.
As of Sunday, the containers were being held in a secured section of the port while an investigation was under way.
Israel previously has foiled arms shipments meant for Hamas in Gaza.
