(JTA) — Red paint was thrown against the entryway of the synagogue in Parma, Italy, apparently to protest Israeli rocket fire into Gaza.

The damage was discovered Sunday. According to local media, those responsible also left the first three letters of a scrawled slogan — “Sto.” Media reports speculated that they had intended to scrawl “Stop bombing Palestine,” a slogan that has appeared in various places around Italy with the renewed violence in recent days but had stopped writing when they realized that they were being recorded on the synagogue’s security camera.

Israel since Nov. 14 has ramped up its military response to hundreds of Hamas and other terrorist groups firing rockets into southern Israel.
