(JTA) — Retired Mossad head Meir Dagan had a liver transplant in Belarus.
The transplant was announced by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday evening. Lukashenko said the operation took place 10 days ago and that Belarus agreed to allow the surgery after other countries refused.
Reportedly there have been some post-operative complications, as Dagan continues to recover in isolation.
The transplant surgery initiative reportedly was undertaken privately and without the assistance of the Israeli Embassy in Belarus.
Dagan retired from the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, in 2011. Since then he has repeatedly called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to launch an attack on Iranian nuclear sites.
