(JTA) — Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner said he does not plan to run for New York City mayor in the next election.

Several news outlets reported in recent days that Weiner, the veteran Democratic lawmaker from New York who resigned from Congress in June 2011 after lying about tweeting an illicit photo of himself to a 21-year-old supporter, is desperate to get back into politics and might use a campaign fund from previous mayoral runs.

But Weiner told People Magazine in an interview slated to be published Friday that he is currently perfecting his current job: stay-at-home dad. The interview was conducted with Weiner’s wife Huma Abedin, a senior aide to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"I’m very happy in my present life," Weiner, 47, told People. "The only next dramatic steps I’m planning on are Jordan’s first," he said, referring to his 6-month-old son.

Abedin also reiterated her support for her husband in the interview and called them "a normal family."
