WASHINGTON (JTA) — International recognition of Israel as the state of the Jewish people is the key to peace, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Ron Prosor told an American Jewish Committee forum.
Speaking Wednesday night before the AJC’s annual Global Forum, Prosor said recognition by the Palestinians and Arab countries was essential for peace.
“Especially in the Arab world, recognition of the connection of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel is paramount,” the envoy said.
Prosor also emphasized the importance of the two-state solution and said it is “absolutely viable and will allow comprehensive peace in the region."
On Iran, Prosor said the country was moving swiftly to develop its nuclear weapons program and called for additional sanctions as a means to stop the Islamic Repubic’s quest.
Prosor also vowed to highlight the issue of Jewish refugees from Arab countries before the United Nations "again and again until the U.N. is going to really deal with this issue."
