(JTA) – Andreja Preger, a noted concert pianist who survived the Holocaust as part of Yugoslavia’s anti-Nazi partisans, celebrated his 100th birthday in Belgrade.

Born in Pecs, Hungary, on March 20, 1912, Preger grew up in Zagreb, where he attended the Jewish school. During World War II, his father and uncle were killed at the Jasecovac camp in Croatia.

Preger lived in Belgrade after the war, where he taught piano at the university, became one of former Yugoslavia’s most prominent concert pianists, and founded the Belgrade Piano Trio, which performed all over Europe.

He has remained involved in the Jewish community, particularly in its cultural activities.
