(JTA) — A play about the 30,000 Jews sheltered by China during the Holocaust premiered in Shanghai.

"North Bank Suzhou Creek," made its debut Thursday in Shanghai and will be brought to New York later this year, Reuters reported.

"This is the Chinese version of ‘Schindler’s List,’ " said Jeffrey Sichel, one of the directors.

The play tells the story of the daughter of a Jewish cafe owner. It was produced in cooperation with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Israeli Consulate in Shanghai.
