(JTA) — The Palestine Liberation Organization has subpoenaed the research of a former Israeli spy and son of a Hamas leader who gathered information on planned Palestinian attacks on Israelis.
Mosab Hassan Yousef, a convert to Christianity, was served last month at an evangelical church in Pennsylvania while he was giving a speech, the Associated Press reported Saturday.
The PLO, which subpoenaed his notes and details of his work, is defending itself against a lawsuit filed by seven victims of terror attacks or their families who claim that the group was involved in the attacks and should pay damages.
Yousef, 32, reportedly served as a spy for Israel’s Shin Bet security services for more than a decade. He wrote about his experiences in a book titled “Son of Hamas.”
The eldest son of Hassan Yousef, a founder of Hamas, was recruited by the Shin Bet in 1997. Israeli agents have been quoted as saying that his information has prevented multiple terrorist attacks.
Mosab Yousef has lived in the United States since 2007. He was granted asylum in the country in 2010 after deportation proceedings were opened against him due to his involvement with Hamas, which the U.S. and others have listed as a terrorist group.
