(JTA) — Amid fighting unleashed by a deadly terrorist attack on southern Israel, Hamas announced it is canceling its truce with Israel.
"There is no longer any truce with the enemy," Hamas said in a statement broadcast on a Gaza radio station early on Saturday, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Hamas has had a truce in place since the end of Israel’s Operation Cat Lead in January 2009. The truce, however, has not put an end to rockets being fired into Israel from Hamas-governed Gaza, though it has diminished their frequency.
Hamas’ announcement comes amid a flurry of Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and Palestinian rocket fire that followed Thursday’s terrorist attacks that killed eight Israelis near Eilat.
