(JTA) — Fiamma Nirenstein, an Italian lawmaker, was elected president of the International Council of Jewish Parliamentarians.
Nirenstein, a member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s ruling coalition who has written extensively about anti-Semitism on the left, was elected June 29 at the council’s Jerusalem gathering.
She succeeds U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), who becomes president emeritus.
The council was launched after a 1988 gathering of the world’s Jewish lawmakers.
