JTA’s Oster, Rodman take Rockower Awards

JTA’s Marcy Oster and Edmon J. Rodman won first-place prizes in the annual journalism contest sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.

NEW YORK (JTA) — JTA’s Marcy Oster and Edmon J. Rodman won first-place prizes in the annual journalism contest sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.

The 2010 Simon Rockower Awards were presented June 29 at the AJPA’s conference in Dallas.

Oster won the Rockower for coverage of immigration to Israel for her personal essay “10 years from aliyah: An immigrant family marks a decade in Israel.

Rodman, a columnist who writes about holidays and Jewish life, won for featured writing for his article “At San Diego Jewish school, snacks must be kosher — pigskin allowed.”

Both JTA writers were recognized in the large-circulation division.

Also in the large-circulation division, the Forward won 13 awards, including nine first-place honors.

In the best website category, the Forward was recognized, along with the St.Louis Jewish Light, in the division for newspapers with a circulation below 15,000. MyJewishLearning.com won first place among web-only publications.

Hadassah took home four first-place Rockowers in the magazine category and two second-place prizes. The Intermountain Jewish News, based in Denver, finished with four top prizes and two second-place finishes in the division for newspapers with circulation below 15,000.

In the large-newspaper division, the Boris Smolar Award for Excellence in Comprehensive Coverage or Investigative Reporting — named for JTA’s late editor — went to Julie Wiener of The New York Jewish Week for “Hebrew Charter Schools Series.” Ellen Futterman and the staff at the St. Louis Jewish Light won in the under-15,000 category for “State of Hate.”
