WASHINGTON (JTA) — President Obama for the first time used human rights provisions in the new Iran sanctions act.
In an executive order Sept. 29, Obama named eight Iranian officials alleged to have been involved in human rights abuses after the June 2009 elections, widely seen as rigged by the theocracy. The officials will be subject to financial and travel sanctions.
The enhanced sanctions act, enacted in July, principally targets third parties that deal with Iran’s banking and energy sectors.
