(JTA) — Jewish children entered the first Jewish preschool in half a century in the Serbian capital.
The school opened in Belgrade by the country’s Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries welcomed eight children to the inaugural class.
Rabbi Yehoshua and Miri Kaminetzky arrived in Belgrade in 2008. Planning the new school took a year, Chabad.org reported.
“The Jewish community of Belgrade suffered a terrible loss after the Holocaust,” said Davor Salom, a supporter of the school.
Salom said that after World War II, Jewish children were educated in a preschool opened by the only remaining synagogue in Belgrade. He said it was run mostly by Holocaust survivors but was shut down due to low attendance.
