WASHINGTON (JTA) — The president of an international umbrella body for Jewish lawmakers is calling for a meeting in Jerusalem to discuss Israel’s "delegitimization."

"Israel is confronting a global effort to denude it of its legitimacy and its right to self-defense," U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the International Council of Jewish Parliamentarians, said in a statement Wednesday. "And while American support for Israel, and particularly for Israel’s qualitative military edge, is critical, it’s not enough to deal with the insidious global effort to choke Israel to death politically and economically.

"The response to this challenge, which so often hides under a U.N. cloak, must be global, and I want Jewish parliamentarians worldwide to take the lead in fighting back as aggressively as possible."

Ackerman also chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Middle East subcommittee.
