(JTA) — Flooding in central and southeastern Europe is threatening the Auschwitz archives.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum was closed to visitors Monday following a flood alert in the area.

Meanwhile, the museum staff was scrambling to move archives and documents from ground level to the next floor, the French news agency AFP reported.

The River Sola, which runs a few hundred yards from Auschwitz, was in danger of flooding in the heavy rains, according to AFP.

At least six people have died in flooding following days of heavy downpours throughout Europe, especially in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Serbia.
